Berkeley, California -
Come celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the peace treaty between Japan and the United State with a rare musical concert. The theme of the Japanese Music Institute of America's 20th Anniversary Concert, scheduled for September 16th at U.C. Berkeley's Hertz Hall is "Music of Traditional Spirit."

One of the highlights of this concert will be the world premiere of JOY part-III, an important new work for shakuhachi, koto, taiko and African drum by Michiyo Koga, commissioned especially for this occasion. The concert will be led by Michiyo Koga, a virtuoso koto artist and the Artistic Director of JMI, and Masayuki Koga, one of the world's most distinguised shakuhachi masters and the General Director of JMI. They will be joined by guest artists Kuniyoshi Suguwara, shakuhachi master and Shoko Izumiyama, an accomplished koto performer from Japan, along with master drummer C.K. Ladzekpo from Ghana, West Africa and Seiichi Tanaka, taiko grand master with the San Francisco Taiko Doko. Also performing will be students from the Japanese Music Institute.

Anyone interested in the ancient culture of Japan will surely enjoy hearing the explosive new compositions played by some of the finest musicians alive today.

For many followers of world traditional music, the main six soloists are the most inspired traditional instrument performers on the planet today. Do not miss this one of a kind event in which Kogas will be joined by colleagues of equal brilliance from around the world. These extraordinary artists have an important message to proclaim through their music: Cultures and peoples, once adversaries, stand more to gain by the sharing of joy and sound than by war and conflict.
